Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young kid. The aunt was on in the evening shifts as a nursing assistant so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. As a student DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of a member of the jury as well as examine their junk. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
